A distant siren whines
from the freeway. Sun shines!
What a Sunday, what peace!
~Franco Fortini (tr. Geoffrey Brock), Ah the Delight…
Gosh, it’s easy to be happy when the sun is brilliant in the flawless blue sky, a cacophony of deliriously chirping birds creates surround-sound music as I sit on the bench out front, and nothing in particular is “wrong“ with life.
There’s also a leaf blower roaring next door, my coffee cup’s empty, and the bench feels hard and cold. But that didn’t dim the upwelling of sheer joy when a tiny, pale yellow bird latched onto a slender birch branch above my head and caught the light till it glowed gold in the sun.
I can only conclude that an earlier, before-I-start-the-day request to my divine team—“help me to be joyful today”—kicked in before the words even left my lips.
*****
Other than my throwaway request for joyfulness, I’m not working particularly hard on being happy. Bringing in joy. Focusing on what I want while sloughing off the many things that give me no pleasure whatsoever.
This easy joy feels completely natural. Effortless. The small bit of me that still pays attention to “what if“ wonders if it’s a phase, if the next wallop from an unforeseeable calamity will knock me flat as it barrels through my life.
I suspect not. The last two months have brought several health-related upsets for me and my family, and despite that trauma—or possibly because of it—the door that had blocked my joy was wrenched open.
Not just opened, but pulled from its hinges, tossed on the rubbish heap, and set ablaze with the strike of a divine match.
Time to remove that particular barrier for good. Transmute it with this ever-lit flame, this blast from the divine cleansing torch that, once lit, burns eternally bright.
And all I have to do is let those good feelings flourish as they well up. Note the empty cups and hard benches if they come to my attention. But give them no more mind than a leaf sailing on the breeze toward the forest floor, where it will be transformed into nutrients to help the forest, and the world, grow into our New Earth experience.
