Yours is a torn and wistful beauty, born
On lonely beaches when the tide is low—
Fog tangled in the marsh-grass…a forlorn
Blue heron wading in the afterglow…
Dull silver lapping on a wet sand-bar…
And lost wings circling near a ghost-white star.
~Doris Caldwell, California Coast
I’ve heard it said numerous times, and it seems more so of late, that the White Hats orchestrate things to Wake People Up. Yesterday it occurred to me that if that’s the case, they may have gone overboard in California.
The entire state has now endured record-breaking heat for nine or 10 days in a row. It seems a stretch, but the repetitive “flex alerts” that have papered the state like trash are starting to feel like a scare event put on by the good guys. I don’t want to eat my words if the power does go out (crossing fingers), but the strident, finger-wagging tone of the alerts—it’s your fault if the power in the entire state goes out because you used your AC!—ought to make people step back and consider exactly why the power grid is “in danger of overload and failure.”
*****
On the first day of flex alerts, I received an EBS-style alert on my cell phone, whose growling vibratory sound made me jump in my seat. Heart pounding, I picked up my phone, expecting to see that a wildfire had broken out or some other emergency situation had erupted nearby. Ready to go into high alert, I read:
You must drastically conserve energy because the state’s power grid is overtaxed.
The flex alert implies that we, the humans living here, are the problem because we dare to use the power we pay for to make our environment habitable. There’s no suggestion that the power companies or the government could be at fault for creating the increasingly dangerous, inadequate power grid that some 40 million people rely on.
I feel that until Californians look past what we’re told and dig into why this state has degenerated to its present condition, we’ll remain in the dark about who’s responsible. We’ll continue to obey ever-more-restrictive and anti-human dictates, until we’re squeezed out of the state or subsist in discomfort and oppression as Team Dark intends.
I’m sticking it out because this is my home. I’ll even play the game of reducing my “consumption” of the resources parsimoniously doled out for my use. But the sooner the White Hats declare victory and free our state (and of course the world), the better.
