It comes from its faraway home in the sky,
And it gladdens each heart, it brightens each eye,
It enters the casement, it enters the door,
A welcome guest to the wealthy and poor.
~Louisa May Alcott, Sunlight
I woke up thinking about discernment this morning. The word, its meaning, how I employ it in my life.
Discernment as a quality is frequently discussed in spiritual or ascension circles, usually with the admonition to use it for ourselves to determine what is “true.” Right now it seems to me both a spiritual tool and a survival tool.
What, exactly, does discernment mean? How can we access it? And the big one, how do we know that we can trust our own discernment? Even a knowledgeable person telling us “use your discernment” means filtering that advice through…you guessed it, our discernment.
To me, discernment is a weighing in the balance of frequently opposing opinions and purported facts: an analysis of the likelihood of truth.
On a more nebulous level, it’s the instantaneous “correct or incorrect” that reveals itself before my conscious mind has even identified the components being weighed. It’s not correct or incorrect in a general sense, either, it’s “correct or incorrect / right or wrong for myself.”
My understanding is that discernment is very individual. I wouldn’t want the responsibility of deciding what is right or wrong for others. They decide that for themselves.

This isn’t new information to most people who’ve been following an intuitive path for a while. I remember working with my Reiki teacher, Carolyn, five years ago, and her penetrating eyes when she would say, “Don’t stop to think about it! What is your first reaction?”
Not necessarily consciously or deliberately, I’ve always checked in first with my intuition. My gut feeling. Most of the time it is wordless, a simple knowing.
This intuitive knowing is inexplicable to those who can’t or won’t believe in it. Which has given rise to many instances of dealing with “real world“ jobs and people and situations, and needing to come up with reasoning that satisfies the analytical minds of those who usually control our jobs and frequently many other aspects of our lives.

One reason I am thinking about this today and trying to pick apart what it means is that I feel there are many people who haven’t used this intuitive discernment, don’t know it’s available, and wouldn’t trust it even if they knew about it.
I believe, and I certainly hope, that as planetary vibrations rise and the light we are receiving intensifies, the bulk of humanity, especially those with a Western mindset, will stop looking askance at those touchy-feely intuitive types who claim to “know“ things, and begin to open the door of their own awareness and realize that they, too, are one of those touchy-feely types.

It’s easy to feel discouraged when contemplating what I believe to be a large segment of humanity who dismiss their intuitive sides.
But then… I close my eyes a moment and allow a brief awareness of humanity to appear. And it’s a joyful awareness! I don’t see gloomy, robotic drudges doing factory assembly or other soul-sucking tasks.
Smiling faces and a lot of sunlight are in this global vision. There is knowingness in the imaginary eyes that meet mine. And laughter.
Those who don’t know, will know, the eyes seem to say. If they are meant to. If it’s the right time.
It certainly feels as if the global awakening of humanity is upon us, that it progresses with increasing light, with each revelation of truth that manifests in public awareness.
Will there be an event of massive energy? Will our skies be lit with an inescapable solar flare?
Or perhaps, will a solar flare manifest within each human heart, a tiny yet limitless sun that, in joining with all the other lit-up suns of the human hearts, will create a magical, gentle, and joyful event of light?
I don’t think that such a light discriminates. I don’t think it will choose to permeate only those who happen to be consciously aware of their intuitive sides.
That’s what my discernment tells me. And since it is a peaceful vision of a possible truth, I embrace it.
For the word nerds among us, the definition per Merriam-Webster online:
Discernment, noun
1 : the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure : skill in discerning
2 : an act of perceiving or discerning something
