But then there comes that moment rare
When, for no cause that I can find,
The little voices of the air
Sound above all the sea and wind.
~Katherine Mansfield, Voices of the Air
Divine guidance has a tough time getting through all the voices in my head.
When my mental and physical ears are stuffed with the static of a thousand distractions, both outer- and self-generated, it’s easy to miss the whisperings of clairaudience. Never mind the internal visions of clairvoyance or the gut-deep sense of knowing that heralds claircognizance.
Or, my favorite, clairsentience. I feel, therefore I know.
The four clairs are mine for the asking, but sometimes I’m leery of making the request. The static of the world can be downright overwhelming; it seems prudent to draw the antennae in a bit.
But if I dampen sensitivity too much, how can I understand input from the world with any degree of personal clarity? The information we receive, we are often told, will be most beneficial when filtered through our personal discernment meters.

Readers of the Golden Age of Gaia blog are probably familiar with the four clairs and ways to open up to them. Here’s an excerpt from what Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., has to say.
Hearing the voice of God and the angels is called clairaudience, which means “clear hearing.” … At first, you may believe that the voice is your imagination or wishful thinking…. We heal this kind of thinking through faith, trust, and practice. …
Your angels may speak to you in pictures and visual mental images. We call this clairvoyance, or “clear seeing.”…If you have trouble understanding your angelic visual guidance, be sure to ask [the angels] for assistance….
The third way we receive angelic guidance is through our emotions and physical sensations. We call this clairsentience, or “clear feeling.”…Clairsentients receive a lot of guidance through their intuition, gut feelings, and hunches….If a thought of doing something swells your chest with warm feelings of joy, this is a directive from God and the angels….
We call the fourth means of angelic communication claircognizance, or “clear knowing.” … Claircognizants know, without knowing how they know. Consequently, they may doubt the validity of their knowingness. This is a mistake, because when divine wisdom enters our mind, it is a gift we can use to improve our life and to serve the world.
[Although people typically have one primary method of receiving messages,] we all have access to all four channels of communication….With practice, you can become adept at receiving messages in all four ways. (1)

I find this information from the University of Metaphysical Sciences course on angels to be helpful, as well.
Negativity is a big block to feeling and connecting to the angels around us….When we let go we free the energy to receive the wisdom and love they bring us. Angels ask you to unburden yourself by forgiving in order to set yourself free….
The calmer you are emotionally, the clearer you can inwardly perceive. Turn off external sensing and turn on internal heart sensing. … Imagine how frustrating it must be to be around a loved one all day long who never notices you or tries to communicate with you. This is how it feels for an angel sometimes, especially when the angel wants to help, but cannot unless you ask for the help. When you trust and tune in to your angel you will be divinely protected and guided in life in the most heavenly ways. (2)

It is such a basic tenet of the free-will universe that sometimes I forget: I must ask for guidance and assistance. Not just be steeped in wordless wishfulness, but specifically request the help of the Divine as I understand it.
So, I ask. And I listen for the voices in the air. What a joy it can be to tune in to the purity of spirit that is available when we quiet down enough to hear the angels whisper.
