Impulses Don’t Hang Around | Heavenletters

God said:

Listen to your impulses. This does not necessarily mean to heed them, beloveds, but to hear them. If the impulses would do no harm to you or another, then, by all means, act on them.

If you have an impulse to call an old aunt, call her. If you have an impulse to walk in the park, by all means, walk in the park. If you have an impulse to stop what you’re doing and do something else, go ahead and try it. Man cannot live by rule alone.

An impulse is more than an idea, you understand. An impulse calls from deep within. You may have impulses that you have no idea from where they come.

An impulse may seem to burst fully born in one stroke, yet, in truth, it has been trying to rise up in you for some time. By the time you receive the impulse, it has been winnowing its way to your consciousness. Finally, in happiness, it bursts through.

When you have an impulse to dance, why, then, dance.

If you suddenly have an impulse to hug your sister, hug her.

Where an impulse will lead, no one knows. Who cares?

If you have an impulse to dig a hole in your backyard, maybe there is a tree that wants to be planted there. Maybe there is a buried treasure eager for you to find. Maybe there is something buried deep within you, if only a yen to touch the soil. You don’t have to know why. You don’t have to find a treasure when you dig. You don’t have to plant a tree, yet you might as well while you are at it. Maybe the tree you choose to plant knows something you don’t. In any case, enjoy following impulses.

If you have an impulse to go outside and look at the moon, be My guest. Go ahead and do it.

If you have an impulse to light a candle and incense and wave them around, why not?

If you have an impulse to change the color of the room you are sitting in, why then, beloveds, go to the paint store. Who knows, it could be you will meet your future there.

If an impulse is on the wild side, maybe that is just the idea. Maybe you have been too tame.

Within legitimate and life-sustaining measures, impulses are to be followed. Is it clear? Don’t jump out a window. Don’t spit from a balcony. Don’t punch out your neighbor. Having an impulse is not an excuse for an ill action.

Yet don’t think that an impulse has to be wise. It doesn’t. It can be silly. So be silly. Do not countermand all your impulses on the basis of their being unnecessary or too, shall We say, impulsive. You are not meant to be so wary, beloveds. You are not meant to restrain impulses or to refrain from their spontaneity. You are not meant to be always so…so…normal.

Impulses are definitely what is called “in the moment”. Impulses don’t hang around. Pass your impulses by, and you won’t even remember what they were five minutes from now. Impulses are not old and wizened. Impulses are young and untried. Like youth, they are fun to be with. Give your impulses a chance.

Impulses are to be open to. They are like a drawer you pull out, and you can be surprised at the contents. Perhaps it is about time that you were surprised.

How will you know what is on the other side of the door unless you open it?
