On this Earth Day, Let’s Put our People Back to Work and Restore Mother Earth | Steve Beckow

Gaia is the Spirit; Earth is the body

Happy Earth Day!

I want to talk about restoring Mother Earth but I’d also like to fold into that a discussion of recovering from the pandemic.

I think our eyes have been opened to the tremendous polluting and despoiling of Mother Earth we humans have caused over millennia.

At the same time, we as a race find ourselves at a complete standstill. Whether temporarily or permanently, large numbers of us are out of work.

This occurs after decades of automating jobs out of existence and undercutting the worker. What will we do for a living? Have we talked about it on social media?

It’s not as if there isn’t a huge amount of work in the world. There is.

Work addresses unworkability. And there is rampant unworkability in the world. Therefore there’s much work to do.

The problem is that the wealth of the world is not being shared equitably. A small group has corraled most of the world’s wealth. Many people have next to nothing.

In my view, a universal basic income and universal medicare is our best interim answer to that situation.

If that measure resulted from the coronavirus pandemic, I’d feel immensely satisfied, even though it cost us dearly.

OK, that takes care of income. Now what about the work there is to do for those who want to earn more than a basic income?

Well, that’s where Mother Earth comes in. We’ve made an awful mess of our home, our planet, her body.

Restoring Mother Earth alone could employ large numbers of people. And now with a universal basic income, people can work on projects which appeal to their heart, not only their pocketbooks. They have leeway to do what they want now, not simply what they had to do.

What better way to honor Mother Earth than to clean up her waters and waterways and to reverse the damage to her lands? Oh, I wish the Reval were here. I hope this is the last Earth Day that we appear before Gaia to report that we’ve done little to reverse the damage to her environment.

I hope that by next Earth Day we can report that we have numerous projects underway, with galactic support, and are making headway in cleaning up the planet, on all levels.
