The Essential Qualities of a Global Leader

Who knows whether I’m right or wrong in what I say?
I say it because I find it darned useful for me and for us to get the mind and heart going on subjects like this. I think our leadership will soon be needed. I take a chance that I may be “right.”
But, as I said years ago, I fully expect everything said here to be outdated within a few years.
Be that as it may, we need to start new discussions – global discussions. And the need will only grow in future years.
For the sake of starting one here, I’m going to assert that, for me, the three essential qualities of a global leader are: Courage, confidence, and compassion. In that order.
Keeping in mind that feelings – and even descriptions of feelings – can be contagious, (1) if I’d like to spread a virus among society it would be these three C’s.
Without courage, very few new enterprises would get started.
One takes a risk in starting something new. One can go out ahead of the herd and be picked off. One can find oneself without support and going under. And so on. It takes a brave person to venture out from – or in this case ahead of – the group.
So courage first.
Confidence second. I had native confidence in my own abilities; my Dad’s super-critical behavior didn’t help it fully blossom. I kept a lot of myself hidden away and lived a secret life in my bedroom, reading children’s classics.
Michael said he was helping in the healing of my sense of myself. That whole conversation is about leadership and healing damage to one’s confidence. Let me cite it at length in the footnotes. (2)
With confidence, I stride forth. Without it, I don’t leave my seat. So confidence second.
Compassion third. What makes us serve others rather only ourselves? (3) For me it’s compassion.
Compassion means for me the ability to feel the same emotions another is feeling, see from the other person’s point of view. When others are sad, I taste what sadness feels like. And I too may burst into tears.
When others are happy, I feel into what happiness feels like. And I may burst into laughter. I walk a mile in their shoes.
Compassion – feeling with another – is the glue that links us with them and influences the direction of our actions.
So those three for me are the essential qualities in a good global leader. Yes, not just a leader. A global leader. That’s where the need is.
And not a dictator, but a person qualified to sit in a circle of equals and represent an arena, a forum, a line of thought, a group of people. Qualified because they have courage, confidence, and compassion.

Leadership is necessary and it does not mean better than.
[The new paradigm] is leadership with love. …
You are getting there. Simply bring it back up, dear heart, and let it flow. It is dormant. You haven’t been attending to it as vigilantly as you might because you have been worried and in fear around finances. Be re-assured and go forth.
You are reconnecting the dots and understanding that this [need for assertion of personal authority] has been nibbling at your heels for a long time. …
