What does Ramana Maharshi mean by “hold the ego and trace it back to the source”? By “hold the ego”, it is meant that you should know all of the thoughts arising in your mind are not your thoughts for you are thoughtless as Pure Awareness/Unconditional Love. The mind or ego has a tendency to externalize itself and judge everything its attention is placed on. The ego (“I am the body” identity) cannot exist without its source namely, Pure Awareness. One must have consciousness to see their “body” and “surroundings” appear. (1) Hence, without consciousness, no judgement can take place for there won’t be any surroundings nor body. As a result, no ego can exist. So by tracing the ego back to the source, you are basically reminding yourself that the ego (illusory “I”) is dependent on Pure Awareness/Unconditional Love (real “I”) to function. In other words, you are tracing back your steps to go back home: the Heart of Awareness. With that remembrance, the need to judge everything comes to a halt. The more you practice this, the more you let life freely express itself without limiting it through judgement. And you will see as a result, you will also express yourself more freely without any fear of being judged. After all, who is there to judge you when it is all you. Furthermore, what occurs within, manifests without. Therefore, if you abide permanently as Pure Awareness, all that you will see are the infinite forms and expressions of that one Source which is you. Therefore, you won't be seeing anything because it is all YOU. Seeing only takes place in separation. In divine union, nothing is seen.
You and life are one and the same. By limiting life through judgement, you limit yourself. It indicates that you don’t freely express yourself due to the fear of judgement from others. As a result, you externalize that fear by judging life.
Footnotes
(1) There are no bodies nor surroundings because you, as Pure Awareness, are all of creation, but the human language cannot describe the indescribable.
