A Foundational Standard for Building Nova Earth | Steve Beckow

Since I won’t be able to build brick-and-mortar structures until after the Reval, I’m helping to create a Nova-Earth literature until that time.

And the place to start is to create some basic distinctions that hopefully will help us in envisioning the work of building Nova Earth.

In some cases, I’m looking for useful/practical distinctions; in other cases, for enlightening/educational ones; and, in still others, for legal/human-rights ones.

I want here to make a first useful/practical distinction, in the form of an assertion; namely, that “justice,” “fairness,” and “equitability,” in a commonsense realm, are equivalent and that they constitute the best foundation for building Nova Earth.

Of the three, the one I’ve found most widely applicable and accepted is fairness.

When I sat as a Member of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) from 1998 to 2006, I learned from the ground up on the job.

And I found that, whenever I did not know what the legal principle was behind a part of my work, if I simply asked myself, “What’s fair in this situation?” I never seemed to end up on the rocks. (1)

People left the hearing room seeming to feel that they’d had a full and fair hearing. I even received a letter from one claimant who acknowledged that he had fabricated his story and thanked me for being moderate in unmasking his ploy.

Based on my experience, I assert that fairness is at the heart of justice. I believe that seeing justice as essentially the application of fairness makes the matter very simple, which has value when we’re dealing with a global and heterogeneous population.

However, all of this remains to be proven.

I can certainly borrow from the experience at the IRB. It provides me with the concept of “fairness” as my foundational standard for whatever part of the new world I build.

(1) OK, I did once. A finding of non-credibility on one claim was overturned. I can’t remember why but I have the utmost respect for the Canadian judiciary so I have no complaints. (No one pays me to say this.)
