Changing Neural Patterns

Q1: I have a question. When you say 'changing neural patterns', and 'brain patternings' as well, I think I'm beginning to understand that when we have emotion, it releases certain chemicals within our bodies. And oft times what happens is that we're addicted to the emotions that we most frequently have. In other words, we actually get in the habit and get addicted to being depressed or being a victim, the feeling of being a victim.

P'taah: This is correct. So how do you change addiction?

Q1: Well, this is a very good question for somebody who has been trying to do it, or who has done it. (Laughs) You replace it with something else or you turn away from it, is what you have to do.

P'taah: You only change it when not continuing the habitude is more important than continuing.

Q1: Yes.

P'taah: You understand?

Q1: Yes, I do.

P'taah: So that when you see that there is a pattern, whether it a physical kind of addiction or an addiction to a behavioral pattern created out of emotional repetition, then as you identify this pattern, you look at your life and you say, "You know, here I am again, just walking out of yet another abusive relationship," and all of the old feelings of unworthiness, inadequacy, powerlessness, victimhood, etc., come to the fore. At some stage, hopefully you would say, "Enough. I have had enough," and the urgency of the desire for change transcends the addiction to the old pattern.

Q1: Mmmhm. I thought it was something to do with changing focus.

P'taah: Well, of course it is. The focus is not then on repeating the old pattern. The focus then becomes a change, however that may be.

Q1: Yes.

P'taah: You may say, "Well, the first thing I am going to do is to be independent. What can I do to create that, to take the first step towards being independent?" And that may well be so that you look for a job. That you look for a new house. That you look for something that shows the greater part of you and the universe that you are there ready and available for change and transformation. You know, when you do that, in fact, to change the pattern becomes not at all difficult. It is when you are stuck in the old pattern saying, "I should change it" or "I must change it." "Yes, I will stop doing this next year, or I will stop doing this next week." It is always called 'trying,' but 'trying' is not a committed avowal for transformation. Does that make sense?

Q1: Yes.

Q: I hear exactly what you are saying and yet, for example, I would like very much to lose 10 pounds.

P'taah: Beloved, when losing 10 pounds is truly the most important thing in your life, of course you will do it. While you are saying, "Yes, indeed, I would be very beautiful if I lost 10 pounds but you know, in the meantime, I will just eat this cream cake."

Q1 and Q: Yes! (laughing)

P'taah: Or do whatever else you think puts on the 10 pounds to begin with.

Q: Yes, you said that what you think is really what's part of it because I know, somehow that it could be effortless and yet I make it a big deal.

P'taah: Because you love all of that.

Q: Yeah, I do.

P'taah: Do you not?

Q: Yes, I do. I love chocolate.

P'taah: But you also love this idea, "Oh, I must lose this 10 pounds."

Q: Well...

Q1: That I don't understand.

Q: Yes, I don't understand it either because I know that you're right but I don't see it.

P'taah: If you really wanted to lose 10 lbs, you would lose it. Nothing could stop you.

Q1: Again, on the conscious level she doesn't like that situation, so what is happening here?

P'taah: But that is neither here nor there. It isn't life-threatening. It is not, really. It does not make any difference to your life -- 10 pounds or no 10 pounds. If it did, you would do something.

Q1: So then swap to me who is more than 10 pounds, more like 10 stones.(Laughs) No, not quite, but you know, where it does make a difference to my life and yet still, I don't.

P'taah: What are the feelings produced, beloved, when you contemplate the idea of being overweight?

Q1: Well, I know I don't like it and I find it disgusting and I think I don't look very beautiful and all the rest of it. I know that's true, but at which point is it going to be enough to make me change it?

Q: Yes.

P'taah: Well, you know, beloved, we would say to you, if you got a great shock and it was life threatening, you would immediately lose the weight. You would immediately. But it is not and it is easy to go along with the same old habitude. The same as when you smoke, the same as when you drink, the same as when you overeat, the same as when you are addicted to abusive relationships.

Q1: Mmm.

P'taah: At least you have changed that one, beloved.

Q1: Yes, and the smoking and the drinking. It's just the weight now.

Q: (Laughs) Yes! One addiction at a time.
